Sometimes a book comes along that you just can't put down. Green Gadgets
for Dummies by Joe Hutsko is one of those books for me. It has 363 pages packed full of interesting facts and how-to's that anyone can understand. For instance, did you know that 40% of the power used in a typical home is from gadgets not turned off? Or that rechargeable batteries self-discharge just sitting around at 1% a day? So much for keeping some charged up just in case - in three months they are dead again just sitting there!
Joe goes into detail about how to configure your computers (both Windows and Macs) and cell phones for best green power draw. In fact he dedicates a chapter to each type of computer. Other chapters are about separating green fact from greenwash hype when buying products, links to websites such as EPEAT (electronic product environmental assessment tool) which is sort of a consumer's reports for greenness ratings of products.
There is a chapter dedicated to e-books and their readers. There is a read green initiative that he discusses and here is a link to their site: Go Read Green He discusses the four "R"s of green gadgetry and talks about energy vampires. Lastly there is a long chapter on how to get rid of excess or obsolete gadgets and how to erase your personal data from same. This is an amazing book and you won't be dissapointed!
